Fun reviewing fire safety

We had fun discussing "leave no trace" and fire safety in our den meeting tonight.  And to make sure we understood fire safety we roasted marshmallows!  The boys did good, staying back and not getting too carried away :-)  Thanks to everyone for helping make our den meeting safe and fun!

We will be working on the Outdoorsman pin during the month of December.  Click here for the worksheet (and other worksheets) so you can get stuff done at home! And either send me an email or let me know at the den meetings when your son does requirements at home - I really want all of our scouts to finish up the pins we work on!

This month’s Parent/Committee mtg is tomorrow (Tuesday) night at 7:00pm.  We will be discussing the business of the Pack and getting ready for our Pack Christmas party.  You can get the phone number from the printed update or your den leader.

Stuff to finish up

I mentioned at the November Pack meeting that our scouts had a couple requirements left to finish up the Artist and Scholar pins. Here's what I was thinking:

Artist: Easiest way to finish up the Artist is to do a scrapbook with your son.
Scholar: Take a look at the requirements.
Craftsman: See entry below.

Like I said at the Pack mtg we can't do everything in the den meetings to fulfill the requirements of each pin; some of it has to be done at home. This is a good thing, since it will help your son prepare for Boy Scouts, where the boys run the troop and have to manage the merit badges they are working on over the course of months. Help your son take responsibility for his own stuff; you'll be surprised how great they do!

Please let me or Susan know if you have any questions, and have your son let us know what requirements they have completed at home. Thanks!

November pins: Artist and Scholar

We will be working on completing the requirements for the Artist pin and Scholar pin during the month of November.  My thinking is that our scouts will be doing some fun and cool art stuff leading up to Thanksgiving, so it's a perfect opportunity to combine efforts and help them earn their pin, and the Scholar pin fits right in with the things they will be doing leading up to the holiday break.  Remember that scouting is a family affair, and that doing things to satisfy requirements at home is encouraged!  You can find the requirements for the Artist and Scholar pins in your son's Webelos book or use the following worksheets:

Artist pin requirements     Scholar pin requirements

As a bonus pin I suggest that you work on the Traveler pin requirements.  If you're going on a trip to see family or friends for the holidays it's a perfect time to expose your son to everything that goes in to planning a trip and earn a pin at the same time!  You can find the requirements in the book or on the following worksheet:

Traveler pin requirements

Craftsman leftover requirement

We had a lot of fun working on the Craftsman pin last month, but only one of our Webelos completed the requirements for it (good job, Daniel!)  The last requirement that needs to be completed by the rest of you is:

Make four useful items using materials other than wood that you and your Webelos den leader agree on, such as clay, plastic, leather, metal, paper, rubber, or rope. These should be challenging items and must involve several operations.

Do this and either send me pictures of these items or bring them in to a den meeting and we'll show it as complete.  I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys create!

Note:  One of the things about Cub Scouts, especially Webelos, is that we can not complete all of the pin requirements at the den meetings.  Several of the pins require our scouts to go and talk to people outside of scouting, like at school, church, or other places.  Family gatherings are usually a good time to knock out some of the requirements because most of our family members have different jobs, hobbies, and other things that help our scout complete a requirement.  Be sure and make David or Susan aware of these completions so we can keep track of them and award your son his pin at the next Pack meeting.  Thanks!

Den mtg tonight 7:00pm

Don't forget - our regular den meeting will be tonight at 7:00pm - see you there!

Good pack mtg, some stuff to do at home

The boys had fun at the pack mtg tonight, and I was happy to award the boys their pins.  There are many boys that need to do just one more thing to finish up the requirements for the Craftsman pin.  Here is what the requirements say:

Make four useful items using materials other than wood that you and your Webelos den leader agree on, such as clay, plastic, leather, metal, paper, rubber, or rope. These should be challenging items and must involve several operations.

Do this, let your den leader know, and you'll earn your Craftsman pin at the next pack mtg.  This will be a theme throughout the year:  we can only do so much at the den mtgs, the rest has to be finished at home.  Please let David Holly, your den leader, know if you have any questions.  Thanks!

Good time making walking sticks!

We had a good time making walking sticks in preparation for our campout at Camp Thunder this coming weekend!  Our scouts did well drilling the holes for their lanyards and Mr. Wamer, Mr. Serrano, and others did well helping guide the boys to tying their lanyards and making sure their sticks were squared away.  Good job!

We built duck boxes!

We had fun at our den meeting last night.  Mr. David Wamer brought the pieces and the tools in and walked our Webelos through building two duck boxes.  The boys did really well, working together as two teams.  As you can see they turned out great!  Our plan is to put them up for use sometime in January or February.  Thanks, Mr. Wamer!

Good pack mtg tonight!

We had a good time at the Pack mtg tonight!  11 of our Webelos were there, and we handed out some Webelos colors and compass patches tonight.  Good job to all of you - you looked good up there!

Pack meeting tonight 7pm

Be sure and wear your uniform with shirt, neckerchief, and hat.  We need to look good as an example for the rest of the Pack.  See you tonight!

Good den meeting tonight!

We had a good turnout tonight - 8 boys!  Kaleb, Michael, Steven, Kevin, Daniel, David, Austin, and Jacob all seemed to have a good time.  We ran a dash, had some 3-legged races, and did the long jump in our efforts to get the Fitness pin, and everyone did a good job.  Be sure and sit down and plan out a menu for the week to help finish off the requirements for the pin and let David Holly know you've done that.

Next week is a pack meeting, so wear your full uniforms and be ready for some fun!  Contact your den leader David Holly if you have any questions...
